As you complete your bachelor degree and wants to commence your master degree, applying for scholarship will be necessary. Scholarships are necessary across all academic levels and master program is not exempted. Whether you’re just finishing an online class or on-campus degree, you need a bursary to boost you further.
The Leiden University Scholarship Program of Excellence (LExS) is open to outstanding non-EU / EEA students who enroll in a full-time master’s degree program at the University of Leiden. Students who are natives of countries not included in the EU/EEA zone are qualified to apply. The offer will require students to travel for the course as online classes are not available for this program.

Level / field of study – All Master’s programs (with the exception of regular LLM (non-advanced) programs) in the following Faculties: Archeology, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, Interfaculty Centrum voor Lerarenopleiding, Medicine / LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Science, Onderwijsontwikkeling in Nascholing (ICLON), Center for African Studies, International Institute for Asian Studies
Number of scholarship awards – The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each department of the Faculty.
Eligible Applicants – International students not belonging to the EU / EEA
Value / duration of the scholarship – The Scholarship of Excellence program of the University of Leiden has 3 awards:
- € 10,000 of the tuition fee
- € 15,000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the legal registration fee
Students must have obtained excellent study results in their previous education such as a bachelor degree, this is relevant to the master’s degree program for which they are applying. As an indication, the student is among 10% of graduates in their previous study program. Note: no proof of classification is required; this information is purely to indicate the level of competitiveness.
Applicants must have a passport other than EEA * and may not be eligible to receive assistance under the Dutch system of study grants and loans.
You must first apply online for admissions to a master’s degree program at the University of Leiden. In your application, you must clearly indicate that you wish to apply for the LExS scholarship and upload your motivation letter for the LExS scholarship on the scholarships page. Distance learning students should not apply as there is no online classes offered for this scholarship program. The deadline for programs that begin in February is October 1, while programs that begin in September have a deadline of February 1.
